Four blissful days....four days to be reminded how wonderful my children are, what a beautiful giggle my youngest has, how bright and curious my older one is, and how sweet and caring my hubby is. Since I started my second company I have barely taken a day off (and yes, I do mean working weekends) let alone four days off. I am not complaining. That is nature of being an entrepreneur and the reality of running a start up. And most days, I don't regret it. And most days, I still get time with my kids and my hubby, so yes, I have it pre
The other day I read about an acquaintance, another author, I know who was featured in The New York Times. As I came upon the story, try as I might to fill my mind with the bird songs and daisies of good will, I felt sandpaper scrape my soul. Immediately, her shiny success became my failure.
Think blogging is a fad, think again. This summer I went to BlogHer08. I knew I was in for an event when I had to I had to find my ticket on Craigs List
Here are a few highlights from my day at BlogHer08:
Buy your ticket early…this event sold out weeks before, but CraigsList to the rescue. If it works for concert tickets then why not BlogHer!
My travels in the "Women's Shelters" taught me so much about life. Never in
my life would I have known how society has done so little. So many of these
women turned to family, churches, neighbors and friends only to be turned
away. No resources and the children. It was so sad and I knew that since I
lived thru this that I am determined to speak up and hopefully be heard to
help women. Material items are not what counts in life but the struggle can be
challenging. I sacrificed everything but I am a survivor.

Hello,
My name is Donna. I was a victim of Domestic Violence and
was in hiding for some five years. Was in numerous Women's Shelters in
different states. I was a women who loved her two young children. My
ex-husband had been to trial and found guilty of assault twice but was
given un-supervised visitaion with my small children. I stood up two my
ex and the court system. It was a long period of sacrafice and suffering
but I do not regret it. My children were worth all of it.
A friend of mine was complaining that she would like to move into a different career area but she doesn't have the skill set. With family, work, etc. she can't pay for school right now. I told her to join a great nonprofit, suhch as the Junior League Palo Alto Mid-Peninsula. Nonprofits are the great training organizations, and the Junior League is among the best.
I recently received a lovely note from our corporate lawyer just checking in and seeing how business was going. He loves the idea of Cubes&Crayons and wanted to see what kind of progress we were making. How thoughtful! He then said he would love to chat and catch up if I had a moment; he had some new things in the works. After several scheduling mishaps, we finally connected a week ago.
Maybe it's just the world I'm living in, but mommy-start-up businesses seem to be all the rage now. Everyone says it's an easy way to spend more time with the family, make a few extra dollars and work for ourselves...
In disucssions with business leaders, there is always a lot of intrigue about how to bring OffRampers back into the workforce when they are ready. The topic of hiring risk always comes up - how can an OnRamper compete with a candidate with current experience? The real hurdle comes when that OnRamper wants to change her industry or area of focus from her past experience.
