Denise Nash, Columbia Business School class of 1990 has always forged her own path balancing work and motherhood. She encourages women to embrace their professional talent while pursuing their personal goals. To this mother of four children – ages 15, 13, 11, and 7 – the ability to have a flexible schedule has always been crucially important.
We had a chance to check-in with Jamie and ask her about her career and family. Here's her story.
How did you get started in fashion?
My family was more conventional in their style sense and I was "dragged" on monthly shopping trips to Saks Fifth Avenue. This proved frustrating at times, as I was not permitted to buy clothes considered “trendy.” So, I decided to make my own! I was inspired by my grandmother to learn to sew by hand, and later on a sewing machine that I received for my 13th birthday.

Please describe your career path, how did you end up at Children Now?
I Graduated from college with a degree in Elementary education and taught for 3 years, but left teaching to earn my MBA in finance at NYU. I worked in Global Finance and Foreign Exchange for 4 years before deciding to stay home with my son (and later daughter) in 1988.

1. Describe your current employment situation (full-time, part-time, job share, flexible)?
I work part-time (24 hours/week) as a PR contractor -
I usually work Monday thru Thursday 8:30-2:30 p.m.
2. Has your career changed since you had kids and if so how?
Prior to children, I held a full-time job as a PR

What made you decide to go back?
I had invested a lot in my education and career prior to having
children. As time went by, and as my son developed from a baby to a
toddler, I had increasing anxiety about having stalled out
professionally. I had several professional licenses that would expire
after 2 years of being out of the industry. The thought of taking
