Dress the Part

Remember "Dress for Success" - the book that institutionalized the skirt-suit-and floppy-tie-blouse look?  Well, we are happy to say those days are over!  That doesn't mean it is okay to stroll into a workplace in your favorite Lilly Pulitzer shift and white sandals.

Business attire runs a wide gamut these days.  Walk into any workplace that has "business casual" dress code and you are likely to see some jeans, some suits, and some unfortunate nightclubbing getups.  How do you make sure you don't end up as a Glamour Don't?  Stick to a look that is classic, well-tailored and appropriate for the work environment.

Here are a few tips:

    •    Fit is key - no bulging gaps between buttons, too-tight waistbands or high-water pants.  Save those for mucking in the garden!

    •    If you feel like you are walking on a runway, you heels might be too high.

    •    Less is more when it comes to accessories.  We all love our heirloom jewelry, just don't wear all Aunt Bee's bracelets at one time.

    •    If you want to be taken seriously, ditch the velour hoodie.  Think fine gauge cardigan instead.

    •    Anything "thigh-high" is out!

Dress for the job you eventually hope to have, not the job you are currently in.  You may want to invest in a few pieces that will become the staples of your wardrobe.  They will pay dividends over time.
