I am over 50 and am feeling like my window to
re-enter the workforce has closed. Are there women
who are having success getting back into the game in
the later years of life? If yes, what are some things
that they are doing to get their foot in the door?
With a society that has traditionally regarded the
prime “career years” as early 20’s to mid-40’s, your
concern is not unusual. While some industries still
adhere to this general age range, others are beginning
to re-think the productive years of an individual and
the value that a more mature candidate can bring to a
position. Both my colleagues and I do have clients
who have successfully re-entered the working world
later in life after taking a significant amount of
time off.
The main recommendation that I give to women in your
situation is to leverage your past career network.
Let former colleagues know that you are interested in
getting back into the industry and see if they have
any leads. Similarly, talk with family, friends and
people who you have met through volunteer service
about your career interests. Having a personal
introduction to a desired company is particularly
helpful for those who have a significant gap in their
resume and/or are job hunting in later life. You may
also want to consider consulting in your field to
re-establish yourself and develop some new contacts.
Finally, working with a career counselor on your job
search, resume, cover letter and interview skills may
prove to be of great benefit to you.
